There’s no doubt that COVID-19 has created thousands upon thousands of heartbreaking moments. Many families have directly felt the effects of the deadly virus and to say the past few months have been tough is an understatement.
However, there have been moments of beauty and selflessness since the very beginning of this pandemic, and so many Americans have pulled together to demonstrate the spirit that our nation is known for.
And it’s not only the US showing solidarity; COVID-19 has brought some incredible moments from many nations.
Here are some of the most beautiful and inspiring moments from the 2020 pandemic.
At the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, while the government was doing its best to put together a plan, some communities also got to work. Informal networks of volunteers started popping up across the US to ensure that vulnerable members of the community would not have to face the virus alone.
An excellent example of the bravery and selflessness seen during COVID-19 is Shopping Angels. The idea was developed by a college student in Nevada to provide free grocery deliveries to elderly and at-risk individuals. What started as 20 volunteers soon grew into a huge network working together to protect those more likely to become ill.
Businesses Step Up
Businesses throughout the US and the rest of the world have been hard-hit by COVID-19 and many small enterprises have been forced to close their doors for good. This hasn’t stopped hundreds if not thousands of businesses stepping up and putting their community first.
A New York City landlord allowed tenants in 18 of his buildings to skip their April rent while many people living in the city struggled with sickness and unemployment. Tyson Foods, Inc. announced that it would be paying around $60 million in bonuses to front-line workers who kept working throughout the coronavirus crisis. And, Baltimore-based Under Armour was once of the first manufacturers to announce that they planned to make and donate surgical masks to the medical staff at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19.
Many large retailers have also done their part to protect the elderly by introducing elderly hour. This incentive gives older people an opportunity to get the essential items they need while being able to avoid crowds and stay safe.
Clapping for Carers
British people are extremely proud of their National Health Service (NHS), so it’s no wonder that for ten weeks people all across the UK came together each week to show their appreciation.
Every Thursday evening citizens took to their doorsteps to clap and whistle as loud as they could. The idea was to make noise for five minutes, but some continued to clap for as long as 20 minutes. Others took to their cars to sound their horns, and some banged on pots and pans.
The aim of this movement was to give thanks to front-line workers putting their lives on the line to help others in their communities. Many other countries also showed their solidarity in the same way, including Spain, Italy, and Portugal.
Singing from Windows and Balconies
The Italians started this community-spirited trend when they were put into very strict lockdown procedures. Italy has been one of the worst-hit countries during the coronavirus outbreak, and the European country saw thousands of deaths. Among the terribly sad news pouring out of Italy, a heartwarming trend became more and more visible.
Italian people are known for their love of community and culture, so it’s perhaps not surprising that many people took to their windows and balconies to sing songs. Tunes ranged from traditional folk songs to soccer anthems, and videos of the singalongs proved that it’s still possible to remain united even during social distancing.
The Spirit of 2020
The fight against COVID-19 is far from over, and experts predict that we still have a long road ahead of us. But, many people also predict that 2020 will live on in our memories as a time of courage and community. Just as our oldest friends and relatives might remember victory celebrations after World War II, and many of us recall the nationwide patriotism that kept us going after 9/11, we will remember these poignant acts of humanity as the moments that truly mattered in 2020.
